Marriott on Tuesday appointed Tony Capuano, president of the group for global development, as chief executive, replacing Arne Sorenson, who died last week while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Capuno joined Marriott in 1995 and was in charge of the company’s accommodation operations in the United States and Canada.

The hotel chain has also appointed Stephanie Linnartz, Group President, Consumer Operations, as President.

“Tony deeply appreciates the thousands of Marriott associates who have ultimately delivered on our customer and brand promise and I know he will be an excellent steward of our culture,” said Executive Chairman JW Marriott, Jr. in a communicated.
