Meet Rell, the last champion to navigate your way into League of Legends from Riot Games. One thing is for sure, is that she is not a delicate princess.
Rell, also known as the Iron Maiden, has a gruesome story that proves her resistance. According to Riot Games, she is “the product of brutal experimentation at the hands of the Black Rose. Rell is a living and provocative weapon determined to overthrow Noxus. Her childhood was marked by misery and horror, enduring indescribable procedures. to perfect and militarize her, magical control over the metal until she stages a violent escape, killing several of her captors in the process.
“Now labeled a criminal, Rell attacks Noxian soldiers on sight as she searches for survivors of her former ‘academy,’ defending the meek while delivering a violent death to her former overseers.”
But who is Rell in terms of League of Legends? She is a new supporting character with ties to LeBlanc and Samira. Hailing from Noxus, the powers behind her capture labeled her a dangerous criminal. Even the Legion of Trifarion is worried about her if she pursues them.
Did we mention she was only 16?
A story created for revenge and justice, Rell is an incredibly interesting addition to the growing roster of champions, but what does she bring to the table in terms of the game?
As a support character, Rell is incredibly powerful (which is nothing new to support) and she is built to lead. Check out his abilities below to get a taste of how he plays:
Passive – Breaking the Mold
Rell attacks very slowly but temporarily steals some of his target’s armor and magic
Resist additional damage based on the amount stolen. Additionally, Rell can siphon resistances from several different enemies to become extremely tanky.
Q – Shattering Strike
Rell stabs forward with his spear, shattering all shields and damaging all enemies hit (damage decreases after the first target). If Rell has an ally linked with E – Attract and Repel, she and that ally regain health for each champion hit by that ability.
W1 – Ferromancy: Crash Down
(Can only cast when mounted) Rell leaps into the sky and transforms her mount into heavy armor, gaining a huge shield that lasts until destroyed or reassembled. Upon landing, she knocks down all enemies around her. Rell can cast E – Attract and Repel and R – Magnet Storm during the transformation.
Rell has increased durability, low movement speed, and movement speed limit in armored form. After transformation, this ability changes to Ferromancy: Ride.
W2 – Ferromancy: Go up
(Can only cast in armored form) Rell rushes forward and transforms his armor into a mount, gaining rapid movement speed. On her next attack, she charges her target for additional damage and flips it over her shoulder.
Rell increased his movement speed when mounted. After transformation, this ability changes to Ferromancy: Crash Down.
E – Attract and repel
Rell magnetically binds a piece of his armor to a target allied champion, granting him bonus nearby armor and magic resist.
Rell can recast this spell to break the bond and stun all enemies around and between her and her bound ally.
R – Magnetic storm
Rell erupts in magnetic fury, pulling nearby enemies towards her. It then creates a gravitational field around itself, attracting nearby enemies for a few seconds. The field does not interrupt the other actions of its enemies.
“We absolutely loved the idea of creating a tanky rack. It had been a while since we had done one – Braum was actually the last one,” says senior designer Justin “Riot Earp” Albers. “But unlike Braum, we wanted her to have a darker past and personality. I explored a few different options, but everyone was really hooked on the concept of bending metal. After I landed on it, we just had to decide where Rell was coming from. “
“The Black Rose, who runs the underground operations of Noxus, is interested in horrible things to further the expansion and power of the empire,” says Jared “Carnival Knights” Rosen. “Demonic call, void magic, resurrect and control the dead gods … A little of this, a little of that.” And one of the things that this crappy 1,000-year-old group of aristocrats have discovered is seal magic, which has the ability to tear magic from living things and force it into someone else.
With each enemy downed, she gets stronger. Rell is “the ultimate weapon,” something the developers had a lot of fun with. “Other children’s magic is placed in Rell along with seal magic, which strengthens his own latent powers,” says Riot Earp. “But the process is incredibly painful, both for Rell and for the other students. I’ve focused a lot on adding the seals to her arms – especially the one holding her spear – to make sure it’s clear when you play it. I wanted the pain she suffered to be clear to the players so they understood her past.
“I wanted to make Rell the most tank tank the world has ever seen. I had this idea of a heavily armored character who sows the ground she walks on, causing the earth to crumble under her power, ”says game designer Stash“ Riot Stashu ”Chelluck. “Unfortunately, it’s hard to show off in League, and I still had to make sure she felt like she was handling metal by theme. I was looking for some interesting ways to map her ferromantic powers into her gameplay, to make her feel really powerful and punchy without feeling like a mage.
With such a twisted story, the reason behind his mount is actually a bit lighter. The first thing I thought of when I heard that Rell was a teenager and had a mount was a coin-operated horse ride – like the ones outside the grocery store, ”Davehelsby recalls. “I saw a lot of teenagers riding them. And it’s so interesting because you see a person on the verge of being an adult, but there’s still a little bit of a kid in them. I just feel like it makes sense to Rell. She has a lot of adult responsibilities on her shoulders, but she’s still a kid and she deserves a little fun.
Rell will join League of Legends roster as a new champion with patch 10.25.
